감각의 요소 : 우리는 감각을 통해 느낀 감정으로, 찰나의 순간을 기억에 담는다. 이전 <감각의 요소> Ver7(Rimowa와의 협업)에서 활용한 메커니즘은 다음과 같다. '프리즘의 위치값이 변화하면서 동시에 회전'. 랙 앤 피니언 기어와 평기어의 조합은 모터의 회전 동력을 직선 운동으로 바꿔준다. 정교한 직선 운동을 위해 LM 가이드라는 부품을 사용했다. 또한, AC 서보 모터를 사용하여 모터의 움직임에 가감속 변수 모션도 추가했다. <감각의 요소> Ver8에서는 1개의 모터가 12개의 프리즘에게 회전 동력을 전달한다.
작가는 기계장치 특유의 형태와 질감, 빛과 운동성과 같은 조형적 요소들을 적극적으로 포용하는 동시에 그 안에 내재된 폭력과 공격의 메커니즘, 오류와 같은 부정적 징후들을 동시에 드러낸다. 일련의 작업을 통해 지속적으로 파고들고자 하는 지점은 기계 미학의 물리적 체현 그 자체이기 보다 인간의 감각계의 확장적 사고와 생멸 시스템의 구조적 환유를 향하고 있다. <감각의 요소>는 초기작업에서부터 여덟 번째 버전에 이르기까지 모터와 기어, 베어링과 같은 기계 메커니즘을 통해 빛의 굴절과 산란을 증폭시켜온 실험을 지속하며 고유한 서사와 공간 시학을 제시해왔다. 최근 작가는 인간과 기계 사이의 역전된 구도 속에서 바이러스와 면역 체계와 같은 최근의 이슈들을 적극적으로 대입해 보고 있다. 기술 문명에 대한 비관적 전망 속에서도 북극광처럼 신비롭게 방사되는 빛의 고리를 생성해내는 작가의 이율배반적 태도 속에서 자연과 인간, 인간과 기계, 존재와 비존재 사이 피아식별의 모호함을 공감하게 된다.
Element of sense: this project was inspired by the concept of capturing moments and preserving them in our memories through our senses.The mechanism used in the previous <The Elements of Sense> Ver7 (in collaboration with Rimowa) is as follows: 'The position of the prisms changes while rotating simultaneously.' The combination of rack and pinion gears and spur gears converts the rotational power of the motor into linear motion. To achieve precise linear motion, a component called an LM guide was used. Additionally, an AC servo motor was employed to add acceleration and deceleration variable motion to the motor's movements. In <The Elements of Sense> Ver8, one motor transmits rotational power to 12 prisms.
This project reveals the negative signs such as violence, attack mechanism or errors in the machinary. At the same time, I aims to show and embrace the machine's formative elements: distinct form, texture, light and mobility. I dig into a human's insight expanding continously and systematic metonymy rather than showing the physical expression of machinary. By employing these mechanisms for this project <Element of Sense>, I aim to suggest distinctive narratives and evoke the poetics of space within their artistic practice. Recently I am putting current issues such as virus and immune system to my work when the machine and human's positions are turning the table.
